Research Interests / Research Profile

• My research deals with the definition, a more exact meaning of the clown-figure (also foolishness, buffoonery) and tries to follow its alterations and history through the major paradigmatic fluctuations that have shaped human thought, and find some key elements and significant features the predecessors leave to their descendants. Using the ideas of especially Mikhail Bakthin, Michel Foucault, Maurice Lever, Enid Welsford (whose books are beyond reach in Hungary), Bouissac and Jean Starobinski, it is not impossible to constitute the clown-character. It appears mostly in ritual performances, in apophatic system criticism, in the lonely role of homo sacer status, always falling down and getting up again, causing laughter in the past, and at times provoking inexplicable fear nowadays. The utmost changes, the most important junctures – the emergence of new Christian thought, the reign of Classicism, the 19th century with the birth of the circus and the 20th century when the whole world came off the hinges – need to be studied to get a relatively broad picture. My research is highly interdisciplinary, still focuses heavily on analyzing art philosophy and works of art."

Teaching Experience

Lecturer: Cirkuszesztétika, bohócesztétika [Circus Aesthetics and Clown Aesthetics Seminar] – BBN-ESZ-402.44, Liberal Arts BA, Aesthetics Department, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Autumn 2012
• Among well known theorists (Bakhtin, Foucault, Bouissac, Shusterman) we presented the basic literature on the field. We were dealing with issues, like: if there is any aesthetic value in the “art of the circus”, when did it start and where did it come from? What is the role of a clown on its stage and what is his role in the history of human culture?
